She lay there, wrapped in my arms as I traced over her smooth skin, enjoying the comfort of her hug and her presence.

“What now?” she asked softly. “What do we do now, Gale?”

“I don’t know,” I said softly. “I am lost. The person I trusted the most, betrayed me. My own best friend is trying to destroy me. I just don’t understand why. Why is he doing all this?”

Her hand intertwined in mine, and she whispered, “I don’t know. But I am with you, every step of the way. Whatever you plan on doing. I will support you. I promise.”

I looked into her eyes, wondering how anyone could be as loving as her. I knew that if I didn’t have her with me, I wouldn’t have the strength in me to fight Daniel. But her lying by my side, holding my hand, and promising to be there was more than enough. I knew I had to fight Daniel at all costs.

“As much as I think about it,” I said. “I don’t know how to save my father’s company. I don’t know how to save my father. He was corrupt, and I shudder when I think of all the cases he must have deliberately messed up because he was bribed. I wonder how many criminals are free, or how many innocents are in jail. It is the truth, and if Daniel decides to reveal it to the world, then there is nothing I can do. Even if I do as he says, he will still reveal everything, so I don’t see how I can stop him. But if he does this, it not only affects the firm, it also brings every case we have ever done into question. All those reopened and under investigation. All those clients we have worked for would be at risk. If this damaged me alone, maybe I would not be so worried, but I am worried about everyone else who will be affected by this.”

“Is there really nothing that can be done?” Hillary asked.

“I am afraid not,” I said. “We have the meeting with Jack, so let’s see what he says, but I doubt he will be able to help. Daniel has got me, and he knows it. His web is too perfect, and I know I can’t escape from it.”

“So, if he decides to reveal everything…?” she asked.

“Then we all go down,” I said. “He has too long to perfect his plan. He has been slowly chipping away at my reputation, slowly proving me corrupt, before he makes his final reveal and brings me crashing down. And I am afraid, Hills. I am afraid that he is going to succeed.”

“Then why don’t you do the right thing?” Hillary asked.

“The right thing?” I frowned.

“Yes,” she said with a small smile on her face. I realized what she meant, and I also knew that she was right.

It was time I did what I should have done a long time ago.
